A LONGING FOR ‘PEACE AND SAFETY’

The Rose Garden Dreams of Margaret MacDonald

When young Margaret MacDonald invented the, “Pretribulational Rapture,” heresy in 1830, she was seeking Peace and Safety from what was to come. She was not well, and would die soon after; this 15-year old girl was afraid for the future. Furthermore, were she to survive this illness she would then have to endure the trials of the Great Tribulation that her pastor, Edward Irving, had been fixating upon. His messages in London and Surrey, England and Port Glasgow, Scotland, during the 1820s, focused almost exclusively on unfulfilled prophecy and the prophetical books, especially the Book of Revelation. For Margaret, the future was fearful. And, since another young lady, 24-year-old Catherine Labouré, at that exact time was herself claiming visions of Mary and gaining wide notoriety, and respect from her Pope, just across the Channel, in Paris, ‘why could Margaret not accomplish something similar for herself in her own church, both fame, and a fantastical and comforting new revelation?’ Thus, a new, convenient, yet heretical doctrine of, “PEACE AND SAFETY,” was born, one that would quickly seduce entire swathes of the new, otherwise Christian Evangelicalism, and lull them into a lazy, drunken torpor of blind darkness and unpreparedness for what is fast approaching, suddenly, as a thief in the night!

2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.

3 For WHEN THEY SHALL SAY, PEACE AND SAFETY; THEN SUDDEN DESTRUCTION COMETH UPON THEM, AS TRAVAIL UPON A WOMAN with child; and they shall not escape.

4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.

5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.

6 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.
